Fully incorporated approach to supporting SEMH through THRIVE
Emotional development is the main area of need for many of our pupils. Within school we have a learning mentor and a pastoral manager who provide support, but it can be hard to measure the impact and to identify what support is needed. The SENCO and learning mentor attended Thrive training and found that we were already using many of the strategies suggested. We introduced Thrive across the whole school, initially using the Thrive assessment with identified pupils (all pupils referred to the SEND department) to allow us to focus exactly on which area of development was missing. The assessment identified particular areas and provided activities needed for that child. Teachers now complete whole class thrive assessments termly. They are then able to identify the group of pupils who require additional assessments and decide if they need individual work. From the whole class assessments the SENCO provides class teachers with a plan for their class with strategies and activities to weave into their PSHE lessons. The pupils receiving individual support have made fantastic progress (they have all improved by at least 30% on the Thrive assessment). This has a knock on effect for SEND pupils and their confidence levels.
