Fred Fox Phonics in the Woods
Fred Fox is an effective programme when a small group of up to 8 children are taken out 4 times a week for about 45 minutes. It is about using the outdoor environment and what it has to offer, especially for those children who find the confines of the indoor classroom a challenge. Learning outdoors is more memorable; it is calmer and more fun in the woods. The programme is however highly structured with clear goals. It is aimed at Year 1 and 2 children who are struggling with phonics.
The sessions follows a familiar pattern, beginning each week with finding Fred and his box, which is hidden somewhere in the woods. In the box are the sounds/targets for the session and these are then explored in different ways using the woodland environment.
The magic of the woods extends to the magic of the character Fred Fox - the childr en work for themselves, but also for him!
Impact has been at least good and often outstanding; the children's confidence improves, enabling them to go back into the classroom and apply the knowledge and skills learnt.
