Whole school responsibilities for SENCO
As part of my wider role, I went to visit a school that had good outcomes for pupils with SEND. The SENCO of the school was a member of SLT and her main area of responsibility was for teaching and learning across the whole school. She strongly believed that all students should receive quality first teaching that catered to their learning needs. This school-wide focus did not only incorporate pupils with SEND but all pupils meaning that every student in the school benefited from this approach. In the past she found that most of the problems she dealt with as SENCO were related to lessons not being tailored to the need of the pupils with SEND. The focus on quality first teaching for all did resolve a lot of these issues.
