Using Philosophy in a SEN setting
At Fitzwaryn School in Oxfordshire we have been using Philosophy to promote pupils' social communication and reasoning skills. We have been running these sessions for two years and have seen really positive results in terms of pupils' abilities to express their opinions, discuss issues that are important to them and share emotions. For a number of pupils we have seen a really positive impact on previously challenging behaviour as they are more able to clarify how they feel and to discuss different options. The attached paper details the various approaches we have used so far and how they have been received by staff and pupils. I feel very passionately about this approach as a means to encouraging pupils to talk, reason, debate and just enjoy conversation with peers and staff.
