Over the past 6 months RTMAT have been working to develop our students Literacy levels. This has been identified as a barrier to their progression both academically and in their broader life skills.
We have set up a Literacy Focus Group involving key staff and together are developing a whole school strategy.
Reciprocal Reading is a structured method of guided reading where children and young people are gradually taught to take on group roles to explore and find meaning in texts. This can be introduced through pictures followed by words, sentences, then increasingly longer texts.
We have worked with some KS3 students as part of our first student focus group however as the project is in the early stages we are yet to consolidate the feedback and impact we have had. It is clear however that the young people have benefited from this.
