A breakthrough communication game for young people who use signing to support their communication. The superhero ‘Boris’ guides users through games that introduce new signs, in vocational contexts in which they might be used and allows students to practice and improve their ability to make the sign correctly using the sign recognition system helping them focus on improving their signing vocabulary and the clarity of their signing.
The Fish in the Tree Report shows the importance of teacher training in literacy and for those children with literacy difficulties, particularly dyslexia. This evidence shows that 84% of teachers told us that it was very important to be train in this area. However 35% of teachers spent less than a day of their courses on supporting children who struggle with literacy difficulties. Further just 18% were offered extra training on SEN, with 69% spending less than a day on dyslexia training.

Since its inception, NGN has been using the Boxall Profile
(a powerful assessment tool developed in the 1970s by
Marjorie Boxall) to measure pupils’ SEBD. By making the
Boxall Profile available online in 2015 the organisation was
able to gather anonymised data from more than 4,715
children and young people in 2015/2016, providing a
snapshot of the SEBD levels experienced by children
and young people and faced by teachers throughout
the UK. This is the Nurture Portrait 2016.
Historically IASS (formerly Parent Partnership Services) have always used a variety of methods to seek feedback from service users.
Following a period of consultation the IASS Network developed a set of 6 core questions that all IASS were then asked to incorporate into their service user feedback questionnaires.
An initial Pilot phase saw 12 IAS Services gather feedback data from nearly 850 parents who had accessed their support.
We use the ‘Switch on to Reading’ scheme to accelerate progress within reading. Children selected are identified as having difficulties with learning to read using phonic strategies and are therefore working below their expected level. Sessions are on a 1:1 basis, last 30 minutes and are carried out every day.
This tool was developed as part of the Better Communication Research Programme (BCRP) in 2012. The BCRP was a 3 year research programme that was part of the Government's response to the 2008 Bercow Review of provision of services for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
The Communication Trust are supporting the BCRP to share their findings.

Maths is an important core discipline with many skills that transfer to other core subjects.
This appears in out TA Handbook which we wrote with TAs to better support TAs in their role. The aim of this resource is to develop TA's feedback skills so that learning is moved on by students thinking about what they need to do as opposed to being told what to do.
