Effective use of nurture groups and other provision to meet the SEMH needs of CYP
One of our strengths at Storywood is the support for SEMH needs. We employ a play therapist one day a week. They do 1:1 counselling sessions. We identify children who may benefit from this provision based on evidence of social emotional and mental health needs. We also have children who have suffered trauma or have attachment needs. We have 5 places for the therapist to work with pupils 1:1 and, depending on individual needs; it can be from 12 weeks up to 25 weeks or longer depending on when the therapist feels the intervention needs to run for. We are also a THRIVE school. Our learning mentor delivers group and 1:1 sessions. We use the online assessment for children with THRIVE to monitor impact of this. We also do social skills groups for children with ASD. Our learning mentor also runs this and our lead practitioner for autism who also feeds into these sessions. We run nurture groups (fun friends and friends for life) as well for children who benefit from this emotion support and self-regulation of emotions. We employ a company called Positive Futures who work 1:1 with children who have behavioural issues and the focus on black and ethnic minority children who have been identified as a group at risk.
