Daily Reading intervention / Mindfulness
Every morning we have all teachers and attending students complete a ‘reading aloud’ activity. Some students choose to read aloud; lots don’t choose to. We record on a sheet who does choose to read. If students don’t want to read, they are able to sit and doodle/colour in mandalas etc. Our young people have not been in mainstream education for many years, so this is a massive step forward for them. It encourages social interactions, literacy development and confidence within a group. All adults role model for the students by reading aloud too. Resources required are adults, books, mindfulness activities and a record sheet. This is a no pressure approach using nurturing principles. It improves reading skills, social skills, tolerance and turn taking.
