1:1 Support for SEND pupils in Mainstream at Secondary
1:1 support for a pupil with an EHCP at Secondary is unusual. They will most likely be the only child in their year group with specific support. The support might be in place due to a SpLD or diagnosis such as Aspergers. The key is finding good quality support: someone who will ensure that their pupil doesn't feel any different to other pupils in their class. This can be achieved by the Learning Support Assistant working across the teaching group with other learners with SpLD or even on a pastoral level. The more the whole class is supported, the less obvious the support for the EHCP pupil is. Enabling the EHCP pupil to become independent is vital as they continue through the year groups. Using "Protective Behaviours" strategies can help with this in terms of the positive terminology and language used.
